Russia not excludes joint use of Gabala radar station's data

Russia is not against the joint use of information received from the Gabala radar station.

Discussions with U.S. counterparts on joint use of the Gabala radar station have not yet taken place, but if Washington is interested in this, it will be possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Baku on Tuesday.

"The most important thing is to work on the problem of security jointly," he said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that within a dialogue on security, which Moscow has offered the West, there may be any options for sharing the information received by a particular country.

Gabala radar station, which is located in northwestern Azerbaijan, was built during the Soviet era as one of the most important elements of a missile defense system of the USSR. After Azerbaijan gained independence, Russia continued to use the station.

Earlier, Russian Defense Ministry reported on negotiations with Azerbaijan to extend the lease of the Gabala radar station until 2025. Duration of the lease agreement and operating conditions of this facility expire in December 2012.


The Russian FM is on official visit to Baku. On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of both countries signed a joint statement in connection ith the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said the statement reflects all the path of relations between the two countries. During the press conference a collection of documents "Azerbaijan-Russia 1992-2012" was presented.
