The Moscow-based Bulletin of the Caucasus press center hosted the first round table from a series of expert meetings on the theme of "The tragic pages of post-Soviet history. The meeting was held on the eve of the twentieth anniversary of the tragic events in the Azerbaijan’s town Khojaly.

Editor in chief of news agency Bulletin of the Caucasus Alexei Vlasov speaking at the meeting said that “20 years have passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, they did not contribute to a better understanding of the historical events that preceded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the prerequisites for the bloody events of the late 1980s - early 1990s. Hot spots in the South Caucasus, Central Asia and other regions led to the deaths and mass forced relocations.

Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and other hot spots remains serious problem, and if the experts don’t examine the conditions of bloody conflicts that accompanied the disintegration of the Soviet Union, there will be more victims.”

Vlasov emphasized that the 1992 Khojaly massacre is one of the most tragic events in post-Soviet history. "This tragedy has not been objectively studied by historians, sociologists and political scientists. The problem is that during a study of such events, scientific approach often gives way to the clichés and political propaganda,” he said.

The participants of the meeting underlined that lack of books and materials often results in escalation of conflicts.
