'France's bill restricts freedom of speech'

26 January 2012 [17:17] - TODAY.AZ
An annual report by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarbeg was heard at the today’s plenary meeting of PACE’s winter session.

Thomas Hammarbeg answered the question of the member of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Ganira Pashayeva “How could the French Senate’s draft law criminalizing the denial of made-up “Armenian genocide” harm the freedoms of speech and expression?”: “Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland already expressed his opinion on this issue, and I fully agree with his opinion. Of course, this is the wrong approach from French Senate to the issue, and it restricts the freedom of speech. I fully support the Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland’s statement on the evaluation of the historic issues by the politicians”.
