Argentine MPs say 'Armenian media reports are pure speculation'

07 January 2012 [13:46] - TODAY.AZ
The Armenian mass media have misrepresented the true facts behind a meeting of a separatist regime leader in Azerbaijan`s Armenia-occupied lands with several Argentine MPs.

Bako Sahakyan, the leader of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, met members of the Congress` Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Néstor Atanasof and Oscar Raúl Aguad, as part of his Argentina visit.

According to the Azerbaijani parliament`s spokesman, during the meeting the Argentine MPs reiterated their support for Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and the country`s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The spokesman said the Argentine parliamentarians dismissed the Armenian media reports as pure speculation.

According to the parliamentary spokesman, during the meeting with Sahakyan, Néstor Atanasof, who chairs the foreign relations commission at the Chamber of Deputies, told the separatist leader the Argentine government did not recognize the so-called Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, and even handed the Argentine Foreign Ministry`s relevant official letter to him. The Azerbaijani parliamentary spokesman said Néstor Atanasof also stressed the importance of the UN Security Council resolutions during the meeting.

According to the spokesman, Sahakyan alleged it was the United Nations` non-democratic approach that made it possible for such pro-Azerbaijani resolutions to be adopted. The spokesman said Néstor Atanasof and Raúl Aguad also asked the Azerbaijani mass media to denounce the Armenian media reports by citing the MPs` own words. The Argentine parliamentarians also expressed their wish to visit Azerbaijan, according to the parliamentary spokesman.
