Creepy newborn baby dolls on sale for mothers to remember birth - PHOTOS

23 March 2010 [10:44] - TODAY.AZ
It looks so realistic that you would almost expect it to start crying. But it won’t, of course, because it is in fact a hyper-realistic doll based on a newborn baby.
Artist Glenda Ewart creates replicas for parents who want a permanent reminder of how their children looked when they were born.

Others are sold around the world to collectors and even are put in nurseries or taken for walks in prams.

Controversially, some are also sold to women who have experienced stillbirths or miscarriages.

The dolls take about a month to create and are accurate down to skin tone, birthmarks and even smell.

About 20,000 hair strands are rooted by hand and the dolls - which start out as a pack of a head and limbs - are often based on pictures.

The ‘reborn’ industry is booming and some buyers even provide extras such as dummies and voice boxes to ensure an accurate version.

The models have been so realistic that in Australia police once smashed a car window to rescue a ‘baby’ – to find it was a ‘reborn’.

‘I spend too much time on each one, but I really enjoy every moment of it,’ said Ms Ewart, of Castlerock, Co Londonderry.

‘I’m the mum of three boys, so I love getting the chance to go out shopping for tiny baby-girl clothes.’
