French minister tours ancient Icherisheher

The French minister of culture Frederick Mitteran and his accompanied delegation visited Icherisheher, one of the world`s cultural heritage sites. The guests were informed of the very ancient history of Icherisheher, the valuable cultural heritage of the Azerbaijani nation.

This residential and historical-architectural complex is surrounded by the wall 8-10m in height and 3,5m in width. The guests were familiarized with Maiden Tower built in VII-VI centuries BC and restored in XII century. The Tower, 28m in height and 16-16,5m in diameter, comprises of a cylinder-like real tower and a huge supporting construction.

They viewed exposition of stone exhibits at Syrataghly Religious and Architectural Complex discovered in 1964 during archeological excavations in the north of Maiden Tower. 52 tombs were found in this territory. The visitors were informed of Icherisheher State Historical and Architectural Reserve, which has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. They also saw workshop of the artist Ali Shamsi in “Kichik Gala” street.
