Azerbaijan completely suspends sturgeon fishing

25 November 2011 [19:01] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan completely suspended sturgeon fishing, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyn Bagirov said. "We will be happy if other countries also join our initiative," he said.

As for the initiative of moratorium on Caspian sturgeon fishing, Bagirov said only Azerbaijan and Russia among the Caspian littoral states made efforts to protect sturgeon species. He said he hoped that other Caspian littoral states would join this initiative in the near future.

“Unfortunately, despite the initiative by the leaders of the Caspian littoral states, there has been no five-part agreement on this issue yet”.  Minister said illegal sturgeon fishing was continued in Azerbaijan and they were struggling with this problem. He said Azerbaijan is also growing sturgeon species in the special farms.  Bagirov said sturgeon sold in the Azerbaijani markets is mostly imported from Russia.
