20% of energy production to fall on alternative energy sources in Azerbaijan, in the next 10 years

20 September 2011 [10:16] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan intends to meet 20% demand of the country’s electricity on account of alternative sources by 2020, director of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Industry and Energy Ministry Akif Badalov said.

According to him, the world’s leading countries have already identified such targets on the use of alternative energy.

In accordance with the general objectives of the European Union, 20% of energy supply must be provided by alternative energy sources until 2020. In some countries up to 2020, 30-40% of demand is planned to provide from alternative sources, and in some - to 2030 - 100%.

Badalov noted that Azerbaijan does not want to lag behind these countries. According to him, Azerbaijan plans to increase the share of alternative energy sources in total energy mix to 20% in 2020.

“If you do not take into account the hydro, the proportion of energy derived from wind, solar, biogas, and does not constitute 1%.”

Badalov noted that alternative sources will provide some energy residential areas in the future.

He added that the development of alternative energy sources, Azerbaijan does not intend to repeat some mistakes of Europe: “Europe used very high tariffs for energy production by alternative sources, large amounts of subsidies. In Europe, this issue affected the high cost of technology in this area and others”. Badalov added that it is considered to achieve the lowest possible tariffs on account of alternative energy sources in Azerbaijan.
