
Azerbaijan Railways Company Head Arif Askerov said in an interview with the Respublika newspaper on Tuesday that Azerbaijan's Railways transported over 22.3 million tons of cargo in 2010, a 7.5% increase compared to 2009.
He said 3.6 million tons of the total volume of cargo fell to domestic transport, 5.7 million tons to import and 4.87 million tons to export operations. 8.2 million tons fell to the transit operations in 2010.
Of the total volume of cargo transportation, 11.8 million tons fell to petroleum and petroleum products.
The total length of railways in Azerbaijan is 2,929.4 km, 2,099.7 of which are operational. Some 804.7 km of the total length of railways, which are in operation, are two-lane roads.
Furthermore, 1271.4 km or 60 percent of the operational railways are electrified and 1,650 kilometers are equipped with an automated signal system.
