A sharp increase in electricity generation from wind turbines has been recorded in Azerbaijan, signaling a gradual shift in the country’s energy mix, AzerNEWS reports.
According to the State Statistical Committee, wind power plants generated 56.1 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity in January 2026, marking an increase of roughly 22 times compared to January 2025, when output stood at around 2.5 thousand kilowatt-hours.
Solar power production also expanded, reaching 18.5 thousand kWh in January 2026, compared to approximately 16 thousand kWh a year earlier.
In contrast, electricity generation from hydroelectric power plants declined to 133.4 thousand kWh, down from about 224 thousand kWh in January 2025, reflecting a significant year-on-year drop.
Despite growth in renewables, thermal power plants continued to dominate overall electricity generation. Of the 2 million 257 thousand kWh of electricity produced nationwide in 2025, about 1 million 978.6 thousand kWh came from thermal sources, maintaining their dominant share in the energy balance, even as output from these plants edged down compared to 2024.
