28 March 2011 [19:00] - TODAY.AZ
The generating capacity increased by 1,500 MW in Azerbaijan by constructing 10 electric power plants over the last seven years. The power of Azerbaijan's energy system increased by 600 MW due to the reconstruction of existing plants, the head of "Azerenergy" (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) Etibar Pirverdiev said in an interview posted on the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

At present, roughly 13 thermal and six hydroelectric power plants with total capacity of 6,400 MW operate in Azerbaijan.

Roughly 600 transformers with a capacity of 2,500 mega-voltampere were installed within the development programs of Azerbaijani power system. More than 30,000 kilometers of various electric lines were laid, he said.

At present, the generating capacity is under reconstruction. In particular, the work on the Azerbaijani power station is under completion. The station's capacity will be increased from nominal 2,000 MW up to 2,600 MW, he said.

He said that the preparatory work for the reconstruction is held at the Mingachevir hydroelectric power station. The necessary equipment has been supplied.

The reconstruction of the Varvarin hydroelectric power station is under preparation. Afterwards, additional 90 MW of capacity will be received.

Today, Azerenergy prepares a plan of actions to restore several small power plants which operation was previously suspended.

He said that much work is done within the construction of new stations. At present, the construction of Janub electric power station in the city of Shirvan is underway. After putting it into operation, the amount of fuel savings will hit about 700,000 tons per year.

The Fizuli hydroelectric power station with capacity of 25 MW will be completed in the middle of this year. It will increase the energy security of the Aran zone.

He said that a hydroelectric power station with capacity of 400 MW is planned to be created at the Kura River in Tovuz region.
