Iran and Azerbaijan to discuss price and volume of natural gas supplies in early 2011

22 December 2010 [13:23] - TODAY.AZ
Iran and Azerbaijan will discuss price and volume of natural gas supplies in early 2011, UPI.com quoted Commercial Director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Asghar Sohilipur as saying.

"Tehran seeks to import 100 million cubic feet of natural gas from Azerbaijan a day. Current import totals 35 million cubic feet,” he said.

Azerbaijan exports its natural gas to northern provinces of Iran in exchange for electricity. Iran aims to create infrastructure in the north to facilitate supply of gas from Azerbaijan.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Natig Aliyev said Azerbaijan can supply natural gas to northern provinces of Iran.

Azerbaijan can deliver 350-500 million cubic meters of gas to Iran to meet needs of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the minister added.

However, the minister said Azerbaijan may make commercial deliveries of gas to Iran to meet the needs of the northern provinces of Iran.

Azerbaijan’s gas supplies to Iran could reach 1 billion cubic meters of gas annually after capacity expansion of the gas infrastructure is improved.
