Deputy foreign minister: Iran's drilling in Caspian not contradict delimitation

03 March 2010 [22:23] - TODAY.AZ
Drilling activities by Iran in the Caspian Sea does not contradict the issues discussed between Azerbaijan and this country on the delimitation of the sea, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov said on March 3.

The process of delimitation [of the Caspian Sea] continues between Iran and Azerbaijan, and the current activities [on drilling] of Iran do not contradict the delimitation," said the deputy minister.

According to Khalafov, the Azerbaijani side got familiarized with the situation around Iran's drilling in the Caspian and it was made clear that Iran's activities do not contradict the sovereign rights of Azerbaijan.

In mid-February, Iran began drilling the first exploration well in the Caspian Sea with the platform "Amir Kabir". Three exploration wells are expected to be drilled with this drilling platform within the first stage. Iran is drilling in the Caspian Sea in order to clarify its hydrocarbon reserves.
