European participants of the Nabucco gas pipeline project hope that Azerbaijan and Iraq will become the first supplier of gas to the pipeline at the end of 2014, Nabucco consortium Director General Reinhard Mitschek said in Vienna on Oct. 1.

“The work to start gas supply by these two countries “will enable to eliminate independence [of the Nabucco gas pipeline project] on a single source.”
European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said in Sept. that the EU has already started negotiations with Azerbaijan which should supply a significant part of gas for Nabucco.
Iraq is represented in the project by the Petroleum Company Limited operating in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Mitschek said the Austrian OMV and Hungarian MOL acquired 10-percent stake of the Iraqi company in May.
