Azerbaijani MP: I am doubtful about soonest realization of Nabucco project

13 July 2009 [11:58] - TODAY.AZ
“The direction of the Nabucco gas pipeline is the major problem for the pipeline."
Member of the Azerbaijani parliament’s Economic Policy Committee and Former Azerbaijani Vice Prime Minister Vahid Ahmadov said while commenting on Nabucco deal to be signed in Ankara today.

“Though Nabucco deal will be signed in Turkey today, I am doubtful that the project will be implemented any time soon. Once the issue of direction is addressed, the realization of the project will be more real,” Ahmadov said.

“Formerly the pipeline cost $3 billion, but now $76 billion. It needs 31 billion cubic meters of gas. But the sources of gas supply remain unknown.”

Earlier Azerbaijan promised to supply 26 billion cubic meters of gas for the project. However, later Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said we will be only transit country, but can also render some help to Nabucco. Turkmenistan sold almost all volume of gas to Russia. Iran and Qatar is not going to supply gas for the project. So, it is difficult for me to say what sources of gas it will have,” he said.

“In nay case, this project is beneficial for Azerbaijan as energy security is one of the major problems worldwide. Presence of several pipelines is beneficial for Azerbaijan,” he said.
