Mirvari Gahramanly: "Singapore's Caspian Shipyard is rudely violating the rights of Azerbaijani citizens"

21 November 2008 [17:50] - TODAY.AZ
"We again witness the disrespect towards Azerbaijanis laws and the citizens of our country on the example of Syngapore company "Caspian Shipyard" said chairman of the Committee of Oilmen rights protection Mirvari Gahramanly at a press conference today.

She noted that discrimination of Azerbaijani workers is obvious in Caspian shipyard, dealing with construction of mobile drilling units and their repair.

"Discrimination is fixed both in wages, food and other services. The Azerbaijani employees are paid $300 here, when foreigners get $1500-2000. Their salaries are transferred to the banking account of the countries, from where they have been involved.

AZN 600 is paid to them along with salaries in Azerbaijan. Moreover, speaking of Azerbaijan as a country with a risk zone, due to the military situation with Armenia, foreigners are paid additional AZN 600", said Gahramanly.

She said the company hires unprofessional workers from Singapore, China, Bangladesh, India.

Gahramanly noted that labor contracts, the company concludes with workers, do not correspond to the Azerbaijani legislation and copies of contracts are not issued to the workers.

"The company attracted another foreign company AA, led by Armenian from Lebanon Albert Abell, by unchecked information, for provision of services. Meal is cooked exclusively by cooks from Asian states and naturally they prepare only those meals, which the Asian countries are used to. The absence of the Azerbaijani workers is not taken into account even while preparing food", said Gahramanly.

Speaking at the press conference, head of the trade union in Caspian Shipyard company Mehman Garayev, after the strike, held in June of 2008, the leadership started to dismiss the activists and organizers of the strike under some different causes.

"The strike involved about 700-800 people, that is the whole Azerbaijani personnel of the company. Before that under pretense of completion of the contract term, the company management started to dismiss organizers and activists. About 100 Azerbaijanis have been dismissed so far. We are told in open that the contract is not prolonged due to participation in the strike", announced Garayev.
