BP declares state of emergency due to explosion at BTC

08 August 2008 [09:09] - TODAY.AZ
British Petroleum declared the state of emergency at the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, caused by an explosion, which occurred on August 6, and a fire on the pipeline.
According to the Wall Street Journal, it means that the British notified the partners of possible non-fulfillment of export contracts.

According to the edition, the exact cause of explosion is unclear yet, but the most widely spread opinion is that the explosion was committed by Kurdish separatists, who assumed the responsibility for explosion.

At the same time, BP does not rule out illegal stealth of oil from the pipeline.

The BTC pipeline pumps 1,000,000 barrels of oil per day which is 1% of oil supplies in the world. The project operator is Botas company and BP holds 30.1% share. Explosion at the pipeline caused oil price hike on the world market, yet the panic regarding supplies blew over by the end of the day and oil prices fell down a little.
