Kars-Akhalkalaki-Baku railroad to spur ferryboat traffic between Georgia and Ukraine

09 December 2006 [01:04] - TODAY.AZ
The ferry communication from Ukraine to Georgia and Azerbaijan will intensify next year after Kars-Akhalkalaki-Baku railroad becomes operational, Ukrainian media quoted Azeri ambassador to Ukraine Taliat Aliyev as saying.

The Azeri ambassador added that the revamped railway is to carry cargo from China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Southern-East Asian countries to Georgia’s sea port Poti. From Poti Port the cargo would be carried by ferry to Ukrainian port Ilichevsky and then go further to Europe.

Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey are still working on the railroad project while the reconstruction work is due to reach completion in 2.5 years.

The trilateral consortium will have to reconstruct 192kms long section of the railway and build 30kms more on Georgia's territory.

The estimated cost of the railway is 200m USD. Georgia is to receive the funding for the reconstruction from Azerbaijan in interest-free long-term credit and then pay back the loan after the railway starts paying off. GBC
