New Customs Code presented

15 November 2006 [15:02] - TODAY.AZ
New Customs Code of Azerbaijan, supported within the Improvement of the Customs Code of Azerbaijan Project by the EU and UNDP, has today been presented.

State Customs Service chairman Aydin Aliyev said they are cooperating with the UNDP for seven years. "41 customs stations have been provided with a system allowing them to function on-line and the number will reach 45 by this year's end," he said.

Funded by EC and implemented by UNDP, the one-year project was launched in January 2006 with the aim of upgrading of Azerbaijan's customs legislation in conformity with modern international standards, in particular the EU Customs Code, and support in improvement and implementation of the SCC strategy on the development of information technologies (IT).
UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Marco Borsotti said the joint cooperation and work has resulted in positive achievements.

Europa House Coordinator in Azerbaijan Wolfgang Sporrer called the new Customs Code a new stage of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU.

Touching upon the newly signed Action Plan between Azerbaijan and the EU Wolfgang Sporrer said assistance to Azerbaijan will go on within this program.

International expert Colin Stringer said some amendments will be made to the Customs Code in the future.

The State Customs Committee and the UNDP signed a memorandum at the end of the event to prolong the Project period and increase the program budget, APA reports.
