Foreign companies do not comply with their commitments

25 September 2006 [11:24] - TODAY.AZ
"The oil companies and other strategic enterprises operating in Ali Bayramli do not pay tax to the local budget but pay taxes in centralized form which results in the city’s needing subsidy from the center," saud MP Azay Guliyev.

The parliamentarian told the APA's Mil-Mughan bureau the activity of foreign companies in Azerbaijan cause dissatisfaction. It does not concern Shirvan Oil, Garasu Operating Company, BP, Salyan oil companies.

"Not all of the foreign companies comply with Azerbaijani legislation. They employ and dismiss who they like. You know, Azerbaijan has relevant legislation on creation of trade unions. There should be a trade union in every enterprise. However, there are not any trade unions in almost most of the foreign companies operating in Azerbaijan. Foreign oil companies assumed special commitment under the contracts signed with the Azerbaijani government. According to this commitment, some part of the income is to be allocated to social sphere and the growth of local budget. Regrettably, they fail to do that. This is incompliance with relevant laws," Mr.Guliyev underlined.

The parliamentarian said he will raise this issue at the parliament. "We are also going to put this to public discussions under the mandate of the National NGO Forum. We receive a lot of complaints regarding this matter. The government should take serious actions about that."
