Azerbaijani Nakhtel mobile operator's capabilities limited, minister says

Nakhtel, the CDMA operator of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, lacks wide opportunities to deploy its own network to render mobile communication services in Azerbaijan as of yet, Communications and High Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov told reporters Sept. 5.

Nakhtel's network is based on CDMA. Currently, the operator is preparing to move to a new standard of communication (GSM). Code Division Multiple Access, or simply CDMA, is a channel access method used by various radio communication technologies. It is used as an access method on many mobile phone standards.

"The company, under a decision of Nakhchivan's Cabinet of Ministers, got a license to deploy the 4G network on the autonomous republic's territory," the minister said.

He added that the mobile services will be rendered by the operator mainly in Nakhchivan, but it is expected that the internal roaming issue will be available soon.

This will allow Nakhtel to expand its activities throughout Azerbaijan.

At present, Azerbaijan has three mobile operators - Bakcell, Azercell and Azerfon, which operates under brand name Nar Mobile.
