The agreement on the project was signed in April 2010 between the companies Gulf Bridge International (GBI) and Telecommunication Infrastructure Company of Iran (TIC).

The cable line will link Iran and the Gulf region with India and the Far East through the eastern route and with Europe - via the western route.

The project will provide connectivity to the network infrastructure of Central Asian countries, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

Using the network infrastructure, ensuring of the sustainability of AzNET segment is considered first of all.

GBI cable system will connect all the countries of the Gulf region and will provide further increase in connectivity opportunities to Europe and Asia. Azerbaijan will be connected to the project through the Caspian segment to be run under the Caspian Sea from Iran towards Astrakhan.

Today Azerbaijan uses resources of ground cable routes, traffic to Azerbaijan comes from three directions. The first two directions - from Russia and Turkey - are used as the key, and the Iranian network infrastructure is used as a reserve.
