Baku 2015 Flame has reached its next destination in the southern part of Azerbaijan, Lankaran, on April 29.

The country’s fourth largest city, Lankaran, is the second destination of the torch of the inaugural European Games. The Journey of the Flame is bringing the spirit of Baku Games across Azerbaijan from April 26.

The torch came from Nakhchivan on board of a special charter flight to the southern city that sits between the Caspian Sea and the Talysh Mountains.

The delegation was saluted by local residents upon its arrival at the airport. This enthusiasm continued all along the streets, as people came out in their thousands to cheer the torchbearers and welcome the event to their city.

In Lankaran, the Flame was routed through tea plantations to Mayak lighthouse on the seaside.

Former Junior World, European Champion Parvin Gasimzade, the first of 12 torchbearers, said: “I am very glad to be a torchbearer of the inaugural European Games. Previously, I was engaged in Greco-Roman wrestling and experienced happiness as the Junior World and Europe Champion. Today’s event reminded me of those days. These moments will be the most precious memories for me.”

Beginning at the Heydar Aliyev Square in the afternoon, the flame was then passed to Nazim Gulamov (Boxing coach / teacher) and on it went to Baba Rzayev (Sport Master of USSR freestyle wrestling), Mammad Mammadov (Sport Master of USSR weightlifting), Aziz Guliyev (Boxing Coach), Ali Agayev (Greco Roman Wrestling Coach), Elnur Hajiyev (Boxing Coach), Togrul Mammadli (National Weightlifting Champion), Sirus Hasanli (Chess Candidate Master), Jeyhun Mammadov (FIDA Master, Chess) and Vugar Sultanov (Taekwondo and Grecco Roman Wrestling Coach.

Malahat Tagiyeva (Track & Field teacher) was the day’s final torchbearer as she carried the flame into the Heydar Aliyev Park to the sound of wild applause.

“As a sport specialist, I am very happy that such a great event was held in Lankaran, because it is a great way to promote sport. The Torch Relay will demonstrate these enjoyable moments and the beauty of our country across the world. We should all be happy and proud of living in such an amazing country.” Jeyhun Mammadov said.

The arrival of the torch was celebrated with a spectacular Festival of Fire. A free evening event brought together thousands of locals. The festivities included a specially created Fire Show, telling the legend of a boy and girl, good and evil, truth and lies. Zoroastrianism, Novruz, mystic rituals and most importantly lots of fire were all part of the mix.

After the celebration in Lankaran, the Baku 2015 torch will head to the neighbor cities of Lerik and Astara for smaller welcome ceremonies on May 1.

In some 48 days, the spirit of Baku 2015 will inspire 60 regions across Azerbaijan, to finally arrive in the magnificent Baku National Stadium on June 12.

Subtropics in Azerbaijan

Famous by its ancient history and rich culture, Lankaran is a perfect place to visit during the summer. Original architecture and a wonderful climate are the landmarks of this city. The region is a large-scale producer of citrus fruit and tea-growing, due to the area’s sub-tropical location.

The sport infrastructure is developing in the city. The Lankaran Olympic Sports Complex was built in 2003, and has hosted some significant events since, including the European Cup in weightlifting. It also boasts a FIFA standard 15,000-capacity football venue, the Lankaran City Stadium. Among the main matches played here was the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Azerbaijan and Finland, plus the group games for the 2012 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Moreover, the natural pearls of Azerbaijan, Hirkan National Park and Gizilagac State Natural Reserve are located here.

Lankaran is inhabited by the Talish, who preserved their ancient traditions and customs until now. Copperware, pottery and sewing traditions are of high interest in the city.

This site of Azerbaijan is also filled with historical attractions. Lankaran Fortress is one of such places. Built in the 18th century, it was one of the most important fortifications in the territory.

The house of Mirakhmad Khan, located in the heart of the city is another must see place in Lankaran. This palace was built in 1913 by French architects, but has clear Azerbaijani features in its architecture.

There are many other sites of interest in Lankaran. Overall, this region is a place of relaxation with its picturesque countryside.
