EU allocates 3.7 mln manat to support Azerbaijan's justice system

30 November 2011 [16:07] - TODAY.AZ
The EU paid  3.7 million manat to the Azerbaijani government on Nov.25 within the scope of the EU funded Justice Reform Support Programme. This is the first tranche of an overall support of 15 million manat that the EU has pledged to transfer to Azerbaijan in support for reforms in the Justice sector. This will include strengthening the Justice Ministry's organisational capacity in the regions, developing a new Academy of Justice, and delivering further reforms to the penitentiary system.

“This reform programme is a milestone for EU-Azerbaijani relations, as it marks a significant step in our cooperation to strengthen rule of law and justice in the country. This strongly reflects the emphasis the EU puts on rule of law and equitable justice in all countries in our neighbourhood," Charge d'Affaires Jerome Pons said.

The activities envisaged by the projects are in line with the objectives set out in the Azerbaijan State Programme of Justice Development for 2009 – 2013. The EU expects to make two more payments under this programme in 2012 and 2013 to contribute to the government's efforts to implement reforms.
