
Fluctuation of the Caspian Sea’s level mainly threatens Azerbaijan among the Caspian littoral states, Assistant Director of the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry's National Hydrometeorology Department Rza Mahmudov said.
He said the lowering of the Caspian Sea’s level is being observed in recent years: “Media have reportedly informed about fluctuation of the Caspian Sea’s level. Based on the forecasts prepared jointly by Caspian littoral states and Russian Hydrometeorology organization, I can exactly say that the lowering of Caspian Sea’s level observed in recent years based on real numbers”.
Mahmudov said that the Caspian Sea’s level decreased by 9sm in 2010, and 20sm in 2011: “Given the climate changes and rivers debouching into the Caspian Se, especially Volga river, it is forecasted that in 3-4 years – till 2015-2016 the figure will be 13-14sm. ’
