Azerbaijan names rare geological objects that need protection

The Geology Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) publicized the rare geological objects of scientific, cultural and historical importance that are in need of protection.

Spokesman for Geology Institute Said Huseynov said a seminar on Earth sciences was held at the institute for this purpose. Chairman of the institute’s department of paleontology and stratigraphy Shikhali Babayev made a report on the theme “Scientific criteria for determining rare geological objects in Azerbaijan Republic”.

He said the Geology Institute prepared Plan of Measures on “Protection and continuous usage of rare geological objects in Azerbaijan Republic in 2009-2012”, it was confirmed under the order issued by the Cabinet of Minister on Aug.22, 2008.

Among the rare geological objects Babayev mentioned the vertebrates burial site in Binagadi, Babek fortress, Bedo spring, Yerfi spring, old oil wells at Girmeki mountain.
