AIDS kills 39 people in Azerbaijan

Some 412 new HIV facts were recorded in Azerbaijan within nine months of this year. Of them 403 are citizens of Azerbaijan and 9 foreigners. The Azerbaijani Health Ministry reported that 296 out of 403 AIDS affected Azerbaijani citizens are men, 107 women.

In 160 cases HIV progressed to AIDS, 155 of these patients are the citizens of Azerbaijan. Some 39 died of HIV infection.

228 (56.7%) out of 403 HIV-infected Azerbaijanis were infected through injection drug use, 139 (34.5%) through heterosexual intercourse, 5 (1.2%) through homosexual intercourse, 8 (2%) were diagnosed with mother-to-child transmission. It is not known how 23 people were infected.
