Azerbaijan introduces draft resolution regarding enlargement of Executive Committee of UN High Commissioner Program for Refugees

Azerbaijan and Rwanda have introduced a joint draft resolution at the UN regarding the enlargement of the Executive Committee of organization’s High Commissioner Program for Refugees.

The document was issued at United Nations Headquarters yesterday during the Third Committee of the UN GA’s 66th session.

While introducing the document, Azerbaijani representative noted that his delegation, with the delegation of Rwanda, had requested UN body’s enlargement from 85 to 87.

Subsequently, the Economic and Social Council took a decision toward that end on July 28, 2011. Baku therefore requests the consensus approval of the draft text.

In his previous letter to the Secretary-General, Azerbaijani Permanent representative mentioned that the country also wishes to become a member of the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

“Azerbaijan has always been fully committed to the aims of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Azerbaijan is a party to the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees of 1951and the Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees of 1967. From 1999 to 2007, Azerbaijan was a Standing Committee observer”, he reminded.

The Representative also mentioned that Azerbaijan is dedicated to the improvement of the situation of refugees through international and regional cooperation, as well as at the national level: “Azerbaijan has demonstrated a strong interest in and devotion to the solution of the problems of refugees and internally displaced persons both internationally and nationally”.
