“Azerbaijan is located in the seismically active zone, on the Alp-Himalayan seismic belt. Shamakhy-Ismayilli, Talish region, Caspian sea, south-eastern slope of the Great Caucasus, Gandjabasar, especially Mingachevir basin are more seismically active.
The danger of Mingachevir basin is that there are earthquake sources under this area,” director of the Republic Seismological Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Gurban Yetirmishli said at the conference entitled “Scientific-practical aspects of the security of the life activity: achievements, problems, prospects”. He said seismic activity increases in Mingachevir basin as the level of water rises.
“Weak shocks were recorded as the level of water rose in the basin during the Kur flooding. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct monitoring around Mingachevir basin, analyze the daily reports,” he said.
