400 prisoners to be released early in Azerbaijan

As the custodial restraint has been removed from the system of the criminal sentences in Azerbaijan, 17 facilities exercising this sentence have been abolished, chief of the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service Medet Guliyev said.

He said the documents of 1767 persons detained there had been submitted to courts and their sentences had been commuted.

Medet Guliyev said the documents of 600 prisoners had been submitted to the Main Department of the Penitentiary Service. Negative reply was given to 200 of them. The rest 400 will be released early.

Chief of the service said according to the plan, the number of penitentiaries will be increased from 13 to 25 in Azerbaijan. The new facilities will be constructed in the regions.
