Moscow Patriarchate: Azerbaijan is model of interethnic and interfaith relations

Azerbaijan is a model of interethnic and interfaith relations, Synodal Department for Church-Society Relations Head Vsevolod Chaplin said at an academic conference on Thursday, titled "Preventing the spread of extremist ideology in the Caucasus," dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence.

Chaplin said that the Caucasus are a key region for global social processes, as are the Balkans and Jerusalem.

"The future of humanity depends on the situation in the Caucasus," Chaplin said. "This is not a fairy tale but reality arising from a large number of historical events there."

At the same time, he stressed that the Caucasus exemplify a peaceful coexistence of different peoples. Talking about extremism and terrorism, the representative of the Moscow Patriarchate said faith may be a factor in overcoming social and political contradictions.

The conference was organized by the Caucasus Muslims Office and the Moscow State Linguistic University. Azerbaijani and Russian religious figures, theologians, and civil society public representatives will attend the conference.
