19 September 2011 [16:00] - TODAY.AZ
The World Health Organization (WHO) published its annual report on extension of non-communicable diseases (diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, insult) in the world countries.

The WHO’s website reported that every year millions of peoples under age of 60 die of these diseases. WHO’s report covered 193 countries. The report say that 85% of people dying in Azerbaijan die of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, insult and the other non-communicable diseases.

The main reasons of the appearance of abovementioned diseases are current daily tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, overweight and the other factors. 50.6% of men and 60% of women are suffering from overweight in Azerbaijan. At the same time 31.4% of women suffer from obesity. Major part of the Azerbaijani population (about 40%) suffers from raised blood pressure.

As regards the potential of the Azerbaijani health system on combating such diseases, WHO says that though there are opportunities in the country for prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases in the country, their monitoring and large registration network doesn’t exist in the country.

The efforts on combating non-communicable diseases in the planet will be discussed at the UN General Assembly’s meeting today and tomorrow.
