Baku remembers victims of slave trade

The "Temiz Dunya" (Pure World) Assistance for Women Public Union (PU) has organized an event dedicated to 23 August- the Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition in Azerbaijan`s capital.

The event brought together representatives of foreign countries` embassies in Azerbaijan, international organizations, deputies, employees of Department on Fight Against Trafficking in Human Beings of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and mass media.

Chairwoman of PU Mehriban Zeynalova provided information on the PU`s activity. Zeynalova underlined a campaign against human trafficking was held by PU last year. The aim of the campaign is to educate the society on human trafficking and divert its attention to the struggle against this social problem.

MPs Rafael Jabrayilov and Ilham Mammadov told of the laws adopted in Azerbaijan to combat human trafficking stressing the necessity of such events. Signing of the decree on fight against human trafficking in 2004 by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev was underlined in the meeting.
Representative of the United State Embassy Adam Sterling and the OSCE Baku Office John MacGregor praised Azerbaijan`s progress achieved in the fight against human trafficking.
Event`s participators were handed over CD`s of popular two films dedicated to human trafficking.

Azeri MP Rafael Jabrayilov was honored with symbolic “Social ambassador of the year” award for the second period for protection for victims of human trafficking.
