Chief of Penitentiary Service: Fatal TB cases among prisoners decreased as a result of improvement of health service

Deputy Justice Minister, Chief of the Penitentiary Service Madat Guliyev received newly-appointed coordinator of the Defense Program of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Quinael Fontana, the Defense Program’s outgoing coordinator Silvie Granisher and Defense Program’s representative Valentina Kim.

Spokesman for the Penitentiary Service said that in his speech, Chief of the Penitentiary Service, police Major-General Madat Guliyev informed the guests about the organization’s activity, improvement of arrangement for the custody of the prisoners, works carried out towards the construction of new penitentiary facilities. Guliyev noted that in recent years as a result of increased cooperation with the ICRC, the level of services provided by health authorities to prisoners and accused persons, especially consumptives, has noticeably improved. Head of the Penitentiary Service said that the number of deaths from TB significantly decreased as a result of improving health care services.

Granisher noted the lending of orthopedic aid to 17 disabled prisoners by her committee during 2009-2010 within the framework of the program on detention facilities and the joint determination with the Penitentiary Service of next prisoners who need the artificial limbs within continuation of cooperation in this direction.
