Flooding complicates movement along Georgian-Azerbaijani border

Repair work on the Georgian-Azerbaijani border highway was launched today, on Monday.

Georgia’s Kakheti Region Governor Giorgi Gviniashvili told Trend that yesterday's flood washed out the road which is located just meters away from the Georgia-Azerbaijan checkpoint at the Lagodekhi border.

The road’s traffic movement is one-directional, thereby complicating two-way border crossing.

Meanwhile, Gviniashvili said, the disaster caused flooding in villages, washing away roads and bridges. The local populations were evacuated from the disaster zone.

Some 500 homes were flooded in the Azerbaijani Kabal village in the Lagodekhi region, and 80 families were forced to flee their homes. Residents say that the Kabal River flooded homes, destroyed crops, livestock, and household food reserves which had been stockpiled for the winter.

The local residents are asking authorities for help.

Weather conditions improved today and specialized rescue teams are carrying out necessary repair work this morning.
