Director General of Seismological Service Center: The earthquake focuses, which have a potential power, are situated under the oil and gas structures in the Caspian Sea

“Three underwater seismic stations will be set in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The agreement was concluded on it with the American “Kinemetrics” company. The advance payment was made and the gathering of the stations has begun. These devices will be ready till end of November, and early December”, Director General of Republic Seismological Service Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Gurban Yetirmishli said.

He said that the Caspian Sea is the most important basin which attains the strategic significance for oil-gas reserves: “The stations will be set at sea depth, the transmitters on the platforms. The seismic stations will be set on “Umid”, “Shadeniz” and “Guneshli” fields. If there are seismic stations at the depth of the Caspian sea, we achieve the opportunity to assess the seismicity of the Caspian sea more correctly. The earthquake focuses, which have a potential power, are situated under the oil and gas structures. The fear of Absheron is from the earthquake focuses in the Caspian Sea. These stations have a great importance in the determination of parameters of the earthquake focuses, their potential power. Without knowing the seismicity of the Caspian sea’s depth, we can achieve ecological and economical damage in the protection of these communication lines. In general, the setup of 10 underwater stations is expected in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian sea, from Iran to Russian border. I think it will be enough”.
