SCC Deputy Chairman: Number of drug users increases in Azerbaijan

Volume of drug production in Afghanistan influences the narcosituation in Azerbaijan, said the Deputy Chairman of State Customs Committee Asger Abdullayev at the working meeting on combating against narcotrafficking.

According to UN experts, 70% of Afghan drugs is exported via neighbour countries and this influences the situation on narco-criminality. Azerbaijani law-enforcement agencies have recorded 3,197 criminal cases on drugs in 2010, up 1.38 times from 2006.

2,400 kg of drugs was withdrawn from the circulation in 2010 and 185 kg of this are heroin.

86% of illegal turnover is hard drugs. Abdullyev noted that, at the same time, number of drug users increases in the country – according to official information this is 28,489 persons, but experts say the number of drug users is more than it.

He noted that, Azerbaijan’s occupied territories and 132 km-border with Iran were used for drug transportation.
