21 June 2011 [17:42] - TODAY.AZ
“According to official statistical data, 137,130 patients with diabetes mellitus in Azerbaijan, this figure is increasing year after year,” endocrinologist of the Republic Endocrinological Center Samira Khalilova said.

She said compared to 20009, the number of these patients increased by 1.5 percent in 2010.
“The percentage of rise of these patients in Azerbaijan is more compared to the US, Russia and a number of countries,” he said.

Khalilova said 886 of the registered patients with diabetes mellitus are under 18. “291 registered in Baku are under 18. This number is increasing day after day. Five of these children are under 3. Most of the patients are under 12-13,” he said.

Noting that hereditary factors play more role in the disease, Khalilova said improper feeding, stress and overweight also play role in this.

“The parents of the children with diabetes mellitus are recommended to measure the blood sugar five–six times a day and keep them under control,” she said.
