Ancient city found in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani archeologists discovered new historical evidence related to Azerbaijani-Georgian border.

"Members of expedition held in Ikinji Shikhli village of Gazakh region found remnants of Khunan city, belonging to the early Middle Age, on a sandy hill at the junction of Kur and Khram (or Anakhatir) rivers", head of Ganja archeological expedition of the Archeology and Ethnography Institute of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences Arif Mammadov said.

Before, both Azerbaijani and Georgian scientists used to assume that Khunan was located between Khatinli and Alimardanli villages of Tovuz region, the scientist said.

However, Azerbaijani scientists, referring to written sources and new archeological evidences, proved that the city was located in the territory of Ikinji Shikhli village.

According to Mammadov, before, Georgian scientists assumed that city Khunan was located in the territory of Tovuz region thus claiming that the border of Georgia reached Tovuz.

"But finding the exact location of Khunan has projected new facts. So, if we consider that in the Middle Ages every great feudal town played a major role at least at a distance of 150 kilometers, then KHunan was a major center for Borchali, Bashkechid, Basarkecher, Shamshaddil, Yerevan and other Azerbaijani lands", Mammadov said.
