Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister meets Greek students

Youth and Sports Minister of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov met the winners of essay contest under the name of "What do I know about Azerbaijan?" which had been conducted among students of Greek universities.

The Minister informed the Greek youth about sports development and achievements in Azerbaijan, and victories of our sportsmen at international competitions and Olympic Games.

Having touched upon the meeting of the Council of Europe’s Sports Ministers held in Baku, Rahimov told about the meeting he had held with the Greek Sports Minister at that event. He stressed the significance of that meeting for the development of links between the sports ministries of the two countries.

Having informed the guests of Azerbaijan’s youth policy in details, Rahimov stated that in line with the order of the President there is being drafted the State Youth Development Program of Azerbaijan for 2011-2015, which will reflect principal tasks in the sphere of youth development.

Essay contest under the name of "What do we know about Azerbaijan?" is also conducted among students of universities of China, Austria and Kazakhstan, the Minister said. Having won the contest, the Greek students arrived in Azerbaijan first.

At the end of the meeting, contest winners were given awards.

Essay contest under the name of "What do I know about Azerbaijan?" had been conducted under a joint participation of the Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Ministry and the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Greece.

Taking part in the contest were students of the Athens branch of the University of Indianapolis, the University of Athens, the Joanna University, and the Salonika Aristotle University.

Leading the Greek delegation to Baku are Vasilis John Botopulos, President of the Athens branch of the University of Indianapolis, and Susana Mihailidu, the branch’s Pro-rector for academic issues.

The Greek winners are currently in Baku. Here, they will conduct meetings at the Khazar University and the Greek Language Chair of the Slavonic University.

In order to familiarize closely with the history of Azerbaijan, the Greek guests will visit the Museum of History, the Old City (the Maiden’s Tower and the Shirvanshahs Palace), the Gobustan Reserve, the Latif Karimov Azerbaijani State Museum of Carpet and Applied Folk Arts, and Baku-operating synagogue, church and mosque.

The Greek youth representatives are expected to visit the grave of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev at the Honored Graveyard and the Valley of Martyrs.

The Greek youth will also tour Azerbaijan’s Guba and Gusari regions at the sidelines of the visit.

The contest "What do I know about Azerbaijan" is conducted in several countries. Winners of the contest in Egypt are already known. The contests in Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Austria and Kazakhstan continue. The contest will be over in May, and the winners are expected to visit Azerbaijan in summer.

All the winners will be awarded with placards established by the Youth and Sports Ministry and various gifts.
