Interior Ministry: Azerbaijan's all strategic sites under high level security

12 April 2011 [17:32] - TODAY.AZ
Police and other law enforcement agencies ensure the security of all strategic facilities in Baku and throughout the country, including the subway stations, Deputy Spokesman for the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry Ehsan Zahidov said. He said the officers are equipped with modern technical means.

The law enforcement officers need people’s help in ensuring public order and preventing potential terrorist acts, he said.

"Citizens should also assist the law enforcement agencies in this. Citizens must be vigilant. Reporting about suspicious incidents and subjects to the Services of the Interior Ministry (102) and Emergency Situations Ministry (112), they will help the law enforcement agencies," Zahidov said.

No state in the world is safe from terror, he said, noting that Azerbaijan has repeatedly faced terrorist acts organized by the Armenians from 1988 to the present day.

Expressing his regret over the explosion in the Minsk metro, Zakhidov said the military environment which our country is in and the terrorist attacks that Azerbaijan faced before forced law enforcement agencies to work more effectively to ensure order and security of citizens; such work continues today.

A strong blast occurred as a train stood at the Oktyabrskaya metro station in Minsk on Monday. The attack killed 12 people and injured 151. Belarusian media report that the law enforcement agencies have apprehended a suspect.

The Belarusian Prosecutor General’s Office has already qualified the incident as a terrorist attack. Speaking at an emergency meeting, President Alexander Lukashenko said the explosion could have been organized by someone either from abroad or from inside the country, and has instructed that security measures be "extremely strengthened" in the republic. He demanded that the perpetrators responsible for the blast be found, BELTA reported.
