Azerbaijan and Asian countries' seismologists clarify potential earthquakes' maximum intensity

07 April 2011 [15:08] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani seismologists and colleagues from several Asian countries are collaborating to determine the potential maximum intensity of earthquakes in the region, head of the department of seismological and geodynamic investigations of the Republican Seismological Service Center of ANAS, Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences Tahir Mammadli, said.

He said that a joint-effort action plan has been drawn up by seismologists from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Syria and other countries of the Middle East, to study earthquake focal points, as well as maximum magnitudes.

"Earlier the maximum intensity of potential earthquakes was estimated at 8.3 points in Japan, but in recent months, the intensity of tremors exceeded this level. This also urged our region’s seismologists to review former predictions, as there is a need for greater accuracy in determining the maximum intensity of potential earthquakes," Mammadli said.

He said that survey results provided by seismologists from Middle Eastern countries will be available in Istanbul in early June.

Several tremors measuring about three and a half points on the Richter scale were recorded near the Azerbaijani cities of Shirvan, Hajigabul and Sabirabad in March.
