Academy of Sciences starts studying crustal fault in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) this week will start studying crustal fault in the Salyan and Hajigabul regions, the ANAS Geology Institute’s Mud Volcanoes Department Director, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Adil Aliyev reported.

He said there are different opinions about the crustal fault in these regions.

"According to preliminary data, the cause of the fault is the recent earthquake in Shirvan. But volcanic activity is also not ruled out," Aliyev said. He stressed that the ANAS Geology Institute’s expedition has recorded data on the site post.

Specialists of the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry’s National Geological Exploration Service came to the conclusion that the fault occurred due to the activation of the Western Caspian plate. The activation of mud volcanoes was also recorded in a territory called Kursyangi-Khidirli, which is located in the zone of the plate's influence.

A number of tremors measuring about three and a half points on the Richter scale were recorded near the Azerbaijani cities of Shirvan,Hajigabul and Sabirabad in March.
