A new international sea trade port in the Alat settlement will be able to receive 20 million tons of cargo by 2015, Azerbaijani Transport Ministry’s senior consultant Azer Aliyev said.

He said the work is underway to build a modern international seaport considering the growth of transit of goods. This will ensure fast and secure flow of goods into the country from the north, east and south, as well as from Europe and vice versa.

Construction of the new international port was launched in November 2010. It is situated 65 kilometers south of Baku in the Alat settlement.

Aliyev said the project, which will be implemented in three phases, provides for the creation of intellectual control system of transport, loading and shipment.

A new logistics center will be constructed on an area of 100 hectares of the 400 allocated for the port. At the initial stage, it was planned that the logistics center will be located on the territory of 50 hectares, where special stores will be set up, which will store 100,000 units of containers, Aliyev said.

The new international sea port in the Alat settlement will be constructed in three stages and will be completed by 2015. The first stage of the project envisages the construction of two bridges for ferry boats, three freight bridges for containers, Ro-Ro ships and simple (universal) dry cargo ships.

The second stage of the project envisages the construction of three other freight bridges. And the third stage of the project envisages the construction of two additional freight bridges. The project is worth over $400 million. After the port is finished its capacity will be 11.6 million tons of cargo.

The port will be multimodal because it will create a free economic zone and a logistic center.
