The formation of pluralistic media in Azerbaijan is a basic principle adopted by the state and society, Deputy Chief of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration’s Social and Political Affairs Department Arastun Mehdiyev said at an international conference on freedom of editorials, ethics and transparency in Azerbaijani media.
“Relations are established and expanded between the media and government agencies. Measures are taken to improve these relations. This serves to the interests of society," Mehdiyev said.
Mehdiyev believes that the elimination of censorship in 1998 played an important role in the development of pluralistic media.
"Furthermore, the abolition of the Press and Information Ministry also prevented state interference in media affairs. In addition, the state has not interrupted its relations with the media and provides the necessary support," he said.
To date, Azerbaijan has registered more than 4,300 media and more than 50 news agencies, Mehdiyev added.
"While most print media, which passed registration, ceased their activities, the media’s role is irreplaceable in addressing the social needs of getting information," Mehdiyev said.
He also explained the reason why some registered print media do not function.
"The reason for this is the weakness of the material and technical base of media and the lack of professional staff. In this direction, public authorities are carrying out the work entrusted to them. However, much remains to be done. Therefore, we are holding various activities to try to solve the problem. The state will perform all assigned tasks for the advancement of print," Mehdiyev said.
