MP says drug addiction should not be perceived as crime in Azerbaijan

Measures to combat this problem as a crime have not given effective results. Drug addiction is an illness, and it should be treated as such, he said. Mustafa added that preference should be given not to punishment, but rather to educational activities, advocacy and treatment.

"Since addiction is considered a crime in Azerbaijan, the number of convicts serving sentences for these acts grows from year to year. This does not give effective results," he added.

Mustafa said the community's attitude toward this problem must also change. Azerbaijan has officially registered more than 21,000 drug addicts.
