"Number of new-born girls reduced in Azerbaijan due to selective abortions"

Chairperson of the PACE Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men, Jose Mendes Bota welcomed the law adopted by the Azerbaijani parliament on prevention of domestic violence.
Bota said at a press conference in Baku after the Gender Equality conference of the Council of Europe ministers that he highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s efforts to eliminate gender inequality. He said there were quite enough problems in this field in Azerbaijan.

Chairperson of the PACE Committee on Actions against the Trafficking in Human Beings Lydie Err said child mortality was a serious problem and there was no family planning in Azerbaijan. She said selective abortions have broken balance between the numbers of new-born boys and girls, which would create great problems 20 years later. Early marriages were also problem in Azerbaijan. The guest considers that solution of the problem is in the activation of political life of the women.
