
Raising water level in the river Kura caused extensive damage to property of the inhabitants of Azerbaijan's Shirvan city.
Up to 500 private homes and yards of two schools were completely flooded, the executive branch of the city said.
"Most of the houses, built of crude brick, and subsistence farming are seriously damaged. Crops and fruit trees are destroyed. A special committee was set up under the chairmanship of the chief executive of the city. More than 20 units of engineering departments and enterprises of the city, including JSC "Reclamation and water economy" were evacuated. Operational staff of the Ministry set about 15 large volume pumps," the report said.
According to the information released by the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the current level of water in the river Kura exceeds the level registered in 2003.
Shirvan is located 110 kilometers from Baku.
