Azerbaijani parliament considers it necessary to adopt law on domestic violence

27 August 2009 [15:17] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani parliament's social policy committee deputy chair Musa Guliyev says it is necessary to adopt a bill on domestic violence.
"As acts of violence and crime in the family have recently increased, the problem must be regulated by the law," Guliyev said.

On March 31, hearings were held in Parliament with regard to Council of Europe's campaign to combat domestic violence against women.

"MPs and local and international experts participated in the hearings on the topic of the "Legal Aspects of Protection from Domestic Violence" organized by the Parliamentary Permanent Committee on Legal Policy and State-Building.

Guliyev said 6 months ago the State Committee for Family, Women and Children submitted a bill on the "Prevention of Domestic Violence" to the Social Policy Committee.

"After discussions in the committee the bill was rejected. Most of the provisions in the bill did not meet the reality in Azerbaijan," the MP said.

The aforementioned bill was not adopted by the Committee on State-Building and Legal Policy either, he said.

"Despite this, it is necessary to debate such a bill in near future," he said.
