Azerbaijan's Supreme Court dismisses appeal of newspaper editor-in-chief charged with high treason

The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has dismissed appeal of editor-in-chief of the Tolshi Sado newspaper Novruzali Mamedov, said chairman of the Committee for Novruzali Mamedov's rights protection Gilal Mamedov.
He said the appeal was connected with the deletion of scientific works in the computer memory. The court presided by Gahraman Allahverdiyev considered the appeal of editor-in-chief of the newspaper to be unfounded and upheld the decision of the Appellate Court.

Notably, by the verdict of the court, Novruzali Mamedov is found guilty under article 274 (high treason) and sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the employee of this newspaper Elman Guliyev is sentenced to 6 years in prison under the same article.

Novruzali Mamedov was detained on February 3 of 2007. The Yasamal district court passed a decision to arrest him for 15 days. The chief of department faces charges under article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code on February 17. Elman Guliyev was charged under the same article.
